Commander Legends

I feel like there's an economics dissertation in this.

It's not really that good. It's not consistent. It doesn't actually help most decks, and the decks it does help didn't need the help. I guess it's ok if you're trying to make Jeskai storm turn on?

But the people are losing their minds, because of how close it is to THE symbol of "unobtainable, expensive, powerful, valuable rare care."

It's the perfect illustration in how value is entirely a product of community consensus.

Commander Legends

@ajanionthespot the big thing for me is it’s a recurrable zero mana rock that helps pay commander tax. T1 Daretti and immediately start accruing value. So have many decks that have artifact recursion and this will go in all of them.

Commander Legends

@theloregoyfs I admit I've got no handle on competitive EDH, but I feel like it being 1 of 99 means that's not a reliable strategy though?

Commander Legends

@ajanionthespot I don’t play cEDH at all. I look at this as draw early, get my commander out much sooner than normal and start accruing value (Daretti on T1, sweet). If I draw it later, it pays commander tax plus some. I wouldn’t make it a cornerstone of a strategy, but happy to include it.

If I had no way to recur it, I wouldn’t run it though.

Commander Legends

@theloregoyfs @ajanionthespot I would deffo run this in something like Narset, getting her out turn 3 sans other ramp seems like exactly the thing such a deck would want, even without recursion.

Commander Legends

@theloregoyfs @ajanionthespot so is this worse for the format than Sol Ring, or has Sol Ring just been around long enough that we've forgotten how powerful it is?

(For the record, I have no sense of how to contextualize it for my own ramp decks. I don't think it'll change my odds of an explosive start. If you're concerned, maybe our playgroup makes a rule that you only include it if your commander costs x mana or more.)

Commander Legends

@DialMforMara @ajanionthespot even accounting for mulligans, the likelihood of having it in an opening hand is maybe 10%. Considering how few games are played, that seems perfectly fine to me. Later on, it’s much more situational

Commander Legends

@theloregoyfs @ajanionthespot yeah, and we don’t need to concern ourselves with how cEDH players will find a way to abuse any part of the Commander social contract, because we don’t play cEDH

(or maybe I’m just too tired to care, and want to get back to the “let’s jam these two Partners together and see what happens” phase of Commander Legends spoiler season)

Commander Legends

@ajanionthespot I'm already seeing the basic, non-premium version of this card pre-selling for $200.

I'm not a fan of this. Getting it in opening hand and playing 4cmc commander on turn 1 is the dream, sure, but you immediately become archenemy.

Commander Legends

@mycroft I'd argue the dream is to drop Kozilek on turn 1, or way easier to do turn 2.
Or just anything 6+ mana three turns early sans other ramp. Imagine a 6 drop turn 3 rather.

Commander Legends

@ajanionthespot not metagame but the economics of rarity/utility and mana/money make this card meta

Commander Legends

@ajanionthespot I think that it's use is far less than people expect. It is only of one color first. So it could help in commander tax, but the number of low cost commanders in a mono color that this helps if drawn first turn are few and far between. Everyone will get at least one story of being completely blown out or going off immediately, but those will be a vocal exception to most playgroups not the rule.
